The American Public Health Association during the first full week of April each year brings together communities across the United States to observe National Public Health Week as a time to recognize the contributions of public health and highlight issues that are important to improving our nation.  >> Read More about National Public Health Week

This year, the School of Public Health is hosting many events during the week focusing on the theme of Start Here.  We hope you can join us for our many events and activities.  Events, dates, times and daily themes follow.

Monday, April 7: Be Healthy from the Start
Check out the SPH Student Government Organization (SGO) information table at the Creese Student Center from 3:30 PM - 7:00 PM. Learn more about healthy habits and maternal and child health.

Tuesday, April 8: Don’t Panic
Careers in Emergency Preparedness Webinar: This event is free to the public and is designed to connect undergraduate and graduate students, as well as public health professionals, to information about careers related to emergency preparedness. 4:00 PM -5:00 PM. Register here.

Lecture: This Ain’t Agriculture: How Industrial Agriculture Hurts Animals and the Public’s Health:

Wednesday, April 9: Get Out Ahead
The Affordable Care Act and the Public's Health: What Can We Expect?
Professor Robert Field of the School of Law and the School of Public Health will explore the Affordable Care Act's impact on public health. Field is the author of "Mother of Invention: How the Government Created 'Free-Market' Health Care," published earlier this year by Oxford University Press. 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM. The Affordable Care Act: Has the Dust Settled?

For the past year, much of the public discussion has focused on the complex and controversial Affordable Care Act and its implementation. We are now coming to ‘the end of the beginning’ of the first phase of implemenation and it's prime time to look around to assess where we are. Thursday, April 10: Eat Well
Conference: Urban Water Solutions in Developing World: The Drexel University School of Public Health is a co-sponsor and will host the "Urban Water Solutions in the Developing World: Sustainable Services and Just Policies for the Poor, 7th Annual Conference." 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM, Behrakis Grand Hall, Drexel University, 3210 Chestnut St., Philadelphia, PA 19104.  Reception to follow at Fairmount Water Works.  RSVP and more information.

Student Table at Mario the Dragon Statue: Stop by SGO’s information table at the Drexel Dragon statue and write a public health message on the big board, spin the prize-wheel, enter the raffle for a disaster preparedness kit, take advantage of the fresh fruit and vegetable giveaways, or visit the mobile HIV clinic. 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM.

Cooking Contest: Drexel University’s Graduate Student Association (GSA) will be cooking up some fun with a cooking contest in MacAllister Hall’s City View Room. Students will prepare healthy entrees to be judged and win prizes. 6:30 PM – 8:00 PM. RSVP here.

Friday, April 11: Be the Healthiest Nation in One Generation
Hiking: Climb to healthier heights with GSA on a hike at Wissahickon Valley.  Meet at 9:30 AM at 33rd and Arch streets for carpool. RSVP to be eligible to win a Drexel University Nalgene water bottle.  Students will be making trail mix beforehand and carpooling to the park.

GSA Mental Health Wellness Seminar: Includes stress relief giveaways and a movie screening with healthy snacks. 4:30 PM - 7:00 PM. GSA Lounge.  RSVP to be eligible for giveaways.

Listen to Frank Anderson, MD, MPH, discuss the history and the lessons learned from the Ghana-University of Michigan Collaborative Health Alliance for Reshaping Training, Education, and Research (CHARTER) program as well as the current 1000 + OBGYNs project to build more academic partnerships in sub-Saharan Africa.
